Toastmaster experience

Hope you have already heard about the Dixons Toastmaster meetings being held every 2 weeks evening directly in Dixons, SSC building. If not, you must come one day to see what the Toastmaster meeting and spirit is about! The main idea is to upgrade presentation and communication skills in a supportive atmosphere so everybody could feel safe there.  Moreover, it is a chance to improve English, have fun and also learn more about leadership.

I remember my last speech that was presented on 4th June 2015 with topic A Firewalking experience. Having chosen this topic, I was happy to have a chance to share my personal experience I had gained just a few weeks ago. To be honest, I was a bit scared which I am usually when going on a stage but in fact I did know I was surrounded by people who are here to support me.

When I started talking about my own motives or the Firewalking tradition at the very beginning, I had already known that the most important goal at that moment is to catch audience´s attention and wake up an interest on this topic. To keep it on this level, I was trying to use also another useful tips - to have a clear and simple structure in the speech as an essencial point so audience could follow talk easily. Or talking about strong moments with appropriate pauses so everybody could understand some few things in speech need to be highlighted. While I was describing the Firewalking preparation or a ceremony itself, I felt to have come back to a day in past when it all had happened. I believe my passion for fire must have been more than visible by delivering this speech. I finished it by sharing how it all can look after this powerful experience and giving a small inspirational conclusion at the very end.

Zuzka Figurova, having a role of Evaluator provided me with a constructive and professional face-to-face feedback when she appreciated dynamic structure and emotions given, but still did not forget to give me points for improvement, for example to improve eye contact and to focus more on a particular TM project parameters for the next time. I like this balanced evaluation, as in fact nothing is just black or white, and it helps us grow in very natural way.

I was given also a feedback from the audience, which is usually provided in a written form when a few points are being dropped on a piece of paper that is then passed to a speaker. It is always very valuable and personally speaking I am always grateful for it, no matter if the speech was OK or there were more gaps and areas to be improved. Every listener has a different perspective from another one and to collect various ideas from them makes a combination of smart ideas and impressions I can take advantage of for next time. Incredible journey that makes us grow!

Toastmaster meetings are about support, but also about a healthy competition when at least 2 speakers have a speech. Every individual of audience can vote which speech he/she liked more. The person, who gets the most votes, becomes the Best speaker of that meeting and is awarded with a huge clapping and a Dixons Toastmaster golden cup. My Firewalking speech had a success so I won the prize at that time! In order to remember this, myself and my evaluator Zuzka made a funny picture.

Can you see this all? The Toastmaster idea demonstrates a journey you do not have to pass alone.  You can choose to be supported all the time. There are also so many other additional skills that Toastmasters can offer – to improve evaluation skills, to gain improvisation skills, time management, organisation perspective, giving inspiration…. you may need them when facing an unexpected situation one day in your real life. Why not practice it before it will happen? You are more than welcome on the next Dixons Toastmaster meeting. Looking forward to seeing you there!
