Brno PHP Meetup April 2016

On 19th April there was a BrnoPHP meetup held in Dixons Retail office. For that purpose was used the biggest meeting room we have here called “White”. Capacity was around 40 people and when the meetup started it was almost full. There were a lot of known people from PHP community like Martin Hason, Jakub Zapletal etc. so even the quality of audience was very good. Since it was held in the office instead of pub there was quiet this time which definitely helps lecturers and even for audience it was much easier to focus on presentations.

First presentation started around 18:20 and was from Petr Pliska who was talking about twelve factors for building web applications. It was very interesting talk about 12 recommendations for writing, building and deploying your applications. I would mention for example one about putting your application configuration into environment variables. This means that when you are going to put your application somewhere else or for example as an open source then you can be sure that you are not going to publish your specific configurations with passwords and usernames.

Second presentation started with a little delay and was from Pavel Teichman who were introducing our firm and stuff around it like how many developers we have what you can do in our firm etc. Then he walked us through the office and we also visited the roof.

After that there was a little break for some refreshments from our firm in a form of a lot of good free pizzas and beers.

Third presentation was from Martin Hlavac who traveled here long way from Berlin. It was about dockerization dev environment in practice. Basically Martin was talking about how they had setup their own dev environment using docker with other development tools. It was quiet interesting for example when he asked how many people were using docker in production and no one actually raised a hand.

Fourth and the last presentation was from Martin Podborsky called “Don't write Tests. Write Specs!”. It was about difference between writing unit tests as we know and specifications. He was explaining how you can write specification for describing behavior of objects and how it is useful. Also he mentioned some cases where you should avoid specs and use some other technology instead.

After that we went to Mamut pub with around 18 people from audience and lecturers. We were having some interesting discussions about who is doing what and why, what they use etc. Personally I like this part the most of it because you can get a lot of information about how the think are done elsewhere what you should avoid how different firms works etc.

Overall I would say that last BrnoPHP meetup was at least for me the best one and I hope that next time it will be even better. I would definitely recommend everyone who is interested in developing applications to come next time because experience and contacts you can get there are priceless.

Also I would like to mention that whole meetup was recorded on a camera so it would be definitely possible for you to see what was happening here on this page https://www.brnophp.cz/meetup-april-2016 (everything except the pub part which is of course the best so next time don’t hesitate to come ;-) ). Right now organizers are editing the video so after they are done they will insert the video there.

Finally I would like to thanks all people who were participating in making this meetup possible like Tomas Chrastek, Marianna Supolikova, Pavel Teichman and others.
