Meeting Children Oncology Fund Krtek

I met with Mrs. Irena Korvasova, manager of a Children Oncology Fund Krtek, to give her our contribution of 8.700czk that we raised during our Halloween party. I had a chance to talk to her about how the Fund works and what exactly they are financing.

Oncology Centre by Children Hospital in Brno is one of the two specialized centres in Czech Republic to cure children of all ages and all types of cancer. Every year they are accepting approx. 150 children, which sounds quite scary, but great news is that thanks to research in this area and the top quality of the doctors and the centre as such, 85% of them can be successfully cured. The treatment itself is paid by state health insurance, however, there are some special needs that are financed by the Fund. Those are:

1.       Support of families. The treatment itself takes 9 – 12 months and during the whole time, one of the parents is in the hospital with the child. This means significant decrease of income for the family and the Fund is helping to overcome this period.

2.       Special equipment. At the moment, Fund is trying to collect money for a special appliance for diagnostics of eye tumour. This is quite common type of cancer for children and until now it was cured only by amputation of the whole eye. The new appliance can help to save the eye for the child. Price for this machine is 2.2million czk and they hope to buy it next year.

3.       Hospice care in home conditions. Unfortunately, some children cannot be saved and the care in their last days in home conditions is not paid by health insurance. The Fund is helping the families by supplying pain remedies and psychological support.

At the moment the Fund is also financing a small book prepared by one of the cured patients that should provide a psychological support to the families that have just found out that their child has cancer. The book is full of tips and positive stories that can help the families to cope with the new and very difficult situation.

If you want to support the fund individually, you can do so either by sending them money directly, or by donating some equipment they need (list of their current needs is on the web page). If you want to go one step further, you can become a volunteer to visit the children and support them. To become a volunteer you need to undergo a short psychological training to be able to help them efficiently. For more information about their activities, do not hesitate and visit the web site: www.krtek-nf.cz
