Scope of the role

The job holder will be responsible for managing and growing one of the largest e-commerce platforms in Europe. This is a complex role which requires a visionary way of thinking, strong stake holders and people management skills and technical understanding at the same time. You will be a leader of the engineering team (120+ people) based in Brno, Czech Republic.

Principal accountabilities

  • Setting the technology vision alongside Lead Architects
  • Defining the local structure and key operating processes
  • Advocate for Agile methodology and ways of working principles
  • Defining Engineering best practices and coaching Technical Leads on how to uphold these
  • Working with DevOps team to ensure engineering chapter is adopting the tooling effectively
  • Acting as the technical ways of working evangelist with wider stakeholders
  • Resourcing of engineers

KPIs and measures of success will include

  • Delivery of excellent customer experiences and high quality, bug-free code (assessed appropriately using surveys, App store ratings. Google Analytics, NPS, technical debt and fixes from squads etc)
  • Regular product increment deliveries across all squads. Increasingly accurate delivery against commitments as company culture and best practices are solidified and coaching trickles down from Technical Leads to Engineers
  • Making improvements to and delivering the Technology vision

Accountability

1. Accountable for defining the strategic Technology vision

2. Accountable for successful, on time, value delivering software into Production

3. Accountable for squad consistency with Agile methods and ways of working

4. Responsible for communication with external stakeholders to agree integration approach with other domains and deliver products that span outside of the company

5. Ensure the Engineering Chapter benefit from economies of scale and sharing knowledge

6. Accountable for payroll for engineers

Knowledge, skills, ability

  • Broad and comprehensive knowledge of the Software Development Lifecycle. Knowledge of Cloud, Devops, automation, architecture and Agile delivery methods
  • Knowledge of engineering best practices, especially in an agile environment of productised teams
  • Experience of acting as a coach and mentor on agile and delivery topics to Technical Leads
  • Experience defining the scope of projects and delivery approach of MVPs, refining and improving the products over set increments
  • Experience developing roadmaps and plans that align with strategic aims and milestones for the business
  • Experience in an Engineering leadership role within an IT function
  • Clear communicator with strong coaching skills
  • Ability to agree across multiple platforms, and delivery of desired commercial outcomes
  • Comfortable using analytics and other metrics to analyse engineering practices, gain insights as to improvements that could be made and translate these into actionable tasks
  • Interest in technological trends and ability to identify those applicable to the company
  • Passion for increasing engineering chapter’s knowledge of current software development best practices by encouraging attendance at industry events, keeping up with and sharing technology trends
  • Good commercial awareness, analytical, judgment and decision making skills, coupled with good problem solving skills and ability to filter and prioritise information
  • Typically educated to degree level
